UTS Prepaid Roaming

With UTS Prepaid roaming, we connect you to the things that matter to when you travel! Whether you travel to the United States, Europe, South America, the African continent or the Pacific region, you can be reached on your own mobile number through voice and data roaming. When roaming abroad you are no longer connected to the Chippie network, but you can continue using your service through the mobile networks of our international partners.

Roaming charges apply

The charges for using the convenience of continued service while you travel are higher than our standard calling and data rates. As we continuously add to the growing list of international carriers, please check the details of the country you are visiting to determine if your wireless device will be operational and which charges will apply for voice and data usage.

How it works

You’re on vacation and you want to call home? UTS has you covered since our voice and data roaming service is part of the basic Chippie package. The best part is that you don’t have to subscribe for it! Just take your phone with you when traveling and connect to the UTS roaming partner in that country!
Making and receiving calls on a roaming partner network is as easy as it is when at home. Anyone trying to reach you simply dials your number as normal and the call gets routed to you effortlessly from the UTS network to the host network. There are no extra charges incurred by the calling party.

Remember to make sure that your GSM phone operates on at least 900/1800 MHz frequency (dual band). For using the roaming service in the USA, your GSM phone must operate on 900/1800/1900 MHz frequency (tri-band). You can find this information in your phone instruction manual or on the website of the brand name of your phone.

Make sure to buy enough Chippie credit before leaving the island, so you can use your prepaid balance while abroad. Another option is to go online and upload credit via your Windward Islands Bank account. As a last resort, you can also ask friends or family to buy credit for you.

For seamless roaming can place a call by just dialing +1721 and the subscriber number you are trying to reach. This basically means you can dial to anyone, as if you were calling from home.

Roaming Rate

Data Roaming

Don’t miss important e-mails or other data files while traveling abroad! UTS data roaming service is activated by default and ready for you to use while you travel. All UTS mobile subscribers can roam with data (GPRS, EDGE, or 3G/4G). You can browse, download important files, read and send e-mails while you are on a business trip or vacation.

The rate for data roaming varies per country & roaming partner and ranges between USD 2.50 and USD 25 per MB (or part of a MB), excluding VAT.The rate per MB is the same for GPRS, EDGE or 3G/4G; the only difference is the speed of downloading and uploading. The speed of data roaming service depends on what data roaming service our partner carriers offer in the country where you roam.

Examples of MB usage for different kinds of data roaming:

  • A typical 80-word plain text message is around 10 KB. Thus, 1024 KB = 1 MB = approx. 102 e-mails or instant text messages of 10 KB each. The average e-mail or text message size depends on the type of mail or message that you receive and send. For instance, e-mails or instant messages with (large) attachments (such as pictures, songs, videos, voice notes, etc.) use up a much larger quantity of MB compared to plain text e-mails or messages.
  • The average usage of MB for photos (via e-mail or instant message) will depend on the size and quality of the photos. The average size of a digital photo ranges from 500 KB to 2 MB.
  • The average use of MB per song is between 3 – 5 MB.
  • The average use of MB for a two hour movie is about 800 MB.

Charges for roaming will be deducted from your prepaid account balance automatically. To prevent high data roaming costs you can deactivate data roaming in the mobile network settings on your mobile phone. Please refer to the instructions of the phone to find out how this can be done. Please be aware that you are wholly responsible and liable for the use of (data) roaming services, which includes sending and receiving voice and/or data traffic, and all costs related thereto.

Roaming Protection

Data Roaming Protection is a service UTS has introduced as of May 8, 2015 to avoid high additional costs for roaming on your invoices due to the use of DATA while traveling abroad.

Making use of data while in another country, meaning ‘data roaming’, can cost considerably more when a client downloads, receives or opens documents, uses e-mail, sends or receives messages or pictures through interfaces such as email, WhatsApp orBBM, surfs the internet, downloads or streams music, uses YouTube or Facebook etc. All of this can cost considerably more when using a foreign partner network than the usual local costs. Unfortunately many customers do not research the associated costs ahead of their trip, nor monitor their usage closely when abroad. This can result in an unexpectedly high bill after the trip. For this reason data roaming protection was introduced.

How does it work?

With ‘data roaming protection’, as a postpaid customer, you can accumulate a maximum of USD 450 a month in data roaming charges. This usage will be divided in 3 times USD 150. When you reache USD 50, you will receive an SMS notification as a warning. If you continue roaming and reach USD 100 an SMS notification will be sent again. After reaching USD 150 the system will disconnect you from the internet and redirect you to a web portal. If you want to continue making use of data while abroad, you click ‘unlock’. This can be done 2 times, up to the maximum of USD 450 during our billing cycle.
